Abstract

Violence against women and girls is a global public health problem and the world's most prevalent human rights violation. WHO has declared such violence a public health priority that requires urgent attention. The UN defines violence against women as "any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life". One type of violence is state violence, with the aim of arbitrary deprivation of freedom. I believe compulsory hijab law and the associated violence against women and girls in Iranian society can be considered a psychiatric emergency.

The Scientific Association of Psychiatrists of Iran has called the past 44 years of compulsory hijab law the reason for weakening the mental and social health of the society and has called for amendment of the law...
