Abstract

Medical, women's health, trauma, and violence prevention researchers have investigated the transtheoretical model and motivational interviewing as potential treatment models for victims of intimate partner violence. Despite these models' prevalence in counseling, they have received minimal attention related to victims of intimate partner violence in counseling journals. The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize the use of the transtheoretical model and motivational interviewing to counsel victims of intimate partner violence. We provide overviews of both models and how they can be applied with intimate partner violence victims. Further, we explore how counselors can use the transtheoretical model and motivational interviewing to inform case conceptualization, treatment planning, and interventions for victims of intimate partner violence. Finally, we discuss the ethical implications of applying the transtheoretical model and motivational interviewing to intimate partner violence.
