Abstract

One of the problems of operating the Puffin (Pedestrian User Friendly Intelligent) pedestrian crossing system concerns pedestrian detection. To address this problem, a study of the Puffin crossing in Edinburgh was conducted which investigated the effect of this crossing type on the level of service to both pedestrians and vehicles at a stand-alone crossing, when compared to the usual Pelican-type crossing. A significant number of occasions where the detection process failed was recorded. The nature of these failures were examined to find the most common causes.
