Abstract

Many advances in healthcare have happened as a consequence of war; notable examples include in wound management, reconstructive or plastic surgery and in the use of helicopters to transport skilled care to the casualty and to reduce the time to receive definitive care in specialist hospitals. Recent armed conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq have helped to drive further understanding in the clinical management of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and of traumatic brain injury (TBI).
