Abstract

Researchers observed scooter riders at 6 locations in Brisbane for 6 hours on each of 4 days to assess rider behaviors and compliance with safety recommendations and laws. Of the 785 e-scooters observed, 90 % were shared scooters (Lime) and the remaining were rider owned. The study was conducted February 18-21 February 2019, four months after Lime received an exclusive contract to operate a dockless e-scooter sharing scheme in the city.

Of the shared scooters 39 percent were either not wearing a helmet or wearing a helmet that wasn't fastened with straps. More than 95 % of private scooter riders wore helmets that were properly fastened.
