Abstract

After a decade-long decline, annual suicide rates in American children and adolescents increased in 2004. A report released in February 2007 described an 18% increase in the suicide rate in persons aged 1 through 19 years between 2003 and 2004. The incidence of suicide, the third-leading cause of death in 15 to 19-year-old Americans, increased from 7.3 to 8.2 per 100,000 persons in 2004.
