Abstract

Widespread public support for war may be difficult to obtain unless war entry is framed as a necessary response to the aggression of others. When the script for war entry is well known, government officials may then be capable of obtaining war entry support by fabricating, or baiting, an enemy attack. The present paper outlines how psychological reactance provides a barrier to the discovery of a war entry script and suggests that the writings of B. F. Skinner on the control of human behavior were prescient. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
