Abstract

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) visibility is at a high. Gay marriage is a reality. Gay urban enclaves are threatened by their own success, historic icons of the movement subsumed by urban development. Yet violence and homelessness continue, and socioeconomic disparities are reinforced in LGBT communities, particularly among women, people of color, young and old, and gender-nonconforming. Overlapping identities and systems of oppression exacerbate the marginalization of LGBT-identified people, creating "unjust geographies" that intertwine race, class, gender, and sexuality. These queer struggles play out in gay centers and in urban areas far from those. How might researchers understand the complex and intersectional nature of queer marginalization in urban space today, situated within multiple modes of social and spatial oppression? How might those involved in the envisioning and making of cities contribute to the social movements still fighting for change and justice? Building on theories of critical geography and queer theory, this article explores the organizing work of queer activist organizations in two New York City neighborhoods, including the author's participatory role as a designer and activist: FIERCE's campaign for a queer youth center in the West Village and the Audre Lorde Project's safe neighborhood campaign in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Through an analysis of the strategies, politics, and spatial implications of such work, the article delineates the ways in which queer community organizers on the ground are fighting for social and spatial change, outside and despite dominant economic and sociopolitical structures.

La visibilidad lesbiana, gay, bisexual y transgénero (LGBT) está en la cúspide. El matrimonio gay es una realidad. Los enclaves urbanos gay están amenazados por su propio éxito, como íconos históricos del movimiento incorporados por el desarrollo urbano. Con todo, la violencia y la privación de techo continúan, y las disparidades socioeconómicas se ven fortalecidas en las comunidades LGBT, en particular entre las mujeres, gente de color, joven y vieja, y entre los inconformistas en materia de género. Identidades superpuestas y sistemas de opresión exacerban la marginalización de la gente que se identifica como integrantes de la comunidad LGBT, creando "geografías injustas" en las que se entremezclan raza, clase, género y sexualidad. Estas luchas de raros y homosexuales hallan expresión abierta en los centros gay y en áreas urbanas alejadas de estos. ¿Cómo podrían los investigadores entender en el espacio urbano actual la naturaleza compleja e interseccional de la marginalización homosexual situada dentro de múltiples modos de opresión social y espacial? ¿Cómo podrían quienes están involucrados en el diseño y construcción de las ciudades contribuir a los movimientos sociales que todavía pelen por cambio y justicia? Edificando a partir de teorías de geografía crítica y teoría homosexual, este artículo explora el trabajo de organización de entidades activistas homosexuales en dos barriadas de la ciudad de Nueva York, incluyendo el papel participativo del autor como diseñador y activista: la campaña de FIERCE en favor de un centro para jóvenes raros en West Village y la campaña por un vecindario seguro del Proyecto Audre Lorde en Bedford-Stuyvesant. Por medio de un análisis de las estrategias, políticas e implicaciones espaciales de tal trabajo, el artículo delinea las maneras como los organizadores de la comunidad homosexual están batallando en el terreno por el cambio social y espacial, desde afuera y a pesar de las estructuras económicas y sociopolíticas dominantes.
