Abstract

I applaud Jeremy Bore's call for national standards for control and restraint (C&R) and understand his argument that staff need training in restraint methods (perspectives November 3). But the matter is far from simple. People have died while being restrained. Restraint has been used too readily and some staff are injured while performing C&R. Training should be part of an overall plan of action following a full organisational, environmental and clinical risk assessment. We should be attempting to understand the many factors that will help prevent and manage violence.
