Abstract

Analysis of terrorism in Italy must be preceded by the statement that, up to now, no reliable statistics or available on terrorist events In Italy. Both the central statistical Institute and the statistical office of the ministry of the interior provided raw data and elementary tabulations which are neither complete nor totally reliable. These data are based on chronological list of politically motivated criminal events, collected by the central offices of the police and carabinieri.

Both offices, so far, have not defined in a clear and definitive way, what is to be considered a terrorist event. Consequently the lists they provide often include the same category heterogeneous events, or events not reliably identified as terrorists. Applied to events reported by the general media, which, on the other hand, rely upon data supplied by the police and carabinieri central offices, or, at every year end, by the minute street of the interior.
