Abstract

This article provides an overview of the behavioral aspects of what has been referred to as the African-American Behavioral Style (AABS). This overview includes examples of behaviors associated with this style while making comparisons to the behavioral style generally associated with Caucasian students.

METHODS of assessing student behavior are examined in relation to potential problems that may arise from cultural differences in behavior and behavioral expectations. Suggestions are provided for conducting assessments that minimize subjective cultural interpretations of behavior as well as for providing educational interventions that may align more closely to the AABS.
