Abstract

A recent meta-analysis indicated strong support for the commonly observed finding that, in contrast to heterosexual men, same-sex oriented men are at greater risk for mental health problems, especially affective disorders (King et al., 2008). The most common explanations for these findings are the increased prevalence of societal prejudice, stigma, and violence that allegedly generate "minority-stress" effects (King et al., 2008; Meyer, 2003; Saewyc, 2007). Hatzenbuehler (2009, p. 707) noted that stigma-related stress "gets under the skin" by inducing elevations in emotional dysregulation, which, in turn, confers risk for increased psychopathology among nonheterosexual populations.
