Abstract

Since 1975, the National Police Agency has been gathering and analyzing data on traffic accidents obtained through completely revised traffic accident statistical report forms. This article discusses the essential elements of the revisions and the returns compiled from the data gathered by use of the new report forms. The returns have indicated, among others, that road conditions account for 17 per cent of contributive causes of all fatal traffic accidents, vehicles for 2 per cent, drivers for 63 per cent and bicycles and pedestrians for 18 per cent. A number of other new statistical data have also been obtained. The National Police Agency, which places high expectations on the effective use of the results of traffic accident analysis using this new method, plans to make the obtained data readily available to various people and organizations concerned.
