Abstract

Alcoholism is not uncommon among older people, but "binge" or facilitative drinking is more characteristic of this age group. Alcohol interacts with many drugs frequently prescribed for older patients--antidepressants, sedatives, hypnotics, tranquilizers, and others--and the combination can sometimes be fatal.
