Abstract

Appraisals of traffic route lighting installations have been carried out by European observers under wet road conditions, and by British observers under both wet and dry road conditions. The appraisals of Continental and British observers under similar conditions have been compared. Relationships between objective measures of luminance, luminance uniformity and glare limitation, and the associated subjective appraisals are discussed. The Glare Mark formula has been tested in the UK under practical conditions, and a study of the contributing variables has led to the development of simplified formulae for dry and wet roads; these formulae give significantly better correlations with mean glare limitation appraisal than does the Glare Mark.
