Abstract

In their analysis of the effects of the 65-mph speed limit on interstate highway fatalities, Gallaher et al have overlooked the most important difference in data that occurred after the change in speed limit. Although there was slight reduction in the percent of victims using a seat belt, from 11.9% to 10.5%, there was a great increase in the percent of victims ejected from the vehicle, from 53% to 70%.These data support the need for mandatory seat belt use rather than any decrease in speed limit.
