Abstract

Abstraction is a fundamental computation tool to apply in complex vision problems, where some details are purposely ignored while building multiple representations of the same visual object All these theoretical and methodological achievements permitted the engineering of many CV applications Some of them have a great potential impact on everyday life, such as the detection of regions of interests (ROIs), for example, face (Sung & Poggio, 1998), car and pedestrian detection (Papageorgiou & Poggio, 2000) in camera images, the recognition of faces or gestures (Essa, 1999), the automated annotation of images (Dems?ar & Solina, 1996; Belongie, Carson, Greenspan, & Malik, 1998) and videos aim - ing at subsequent information retrieval, the remote - sensed data interpretation supporting data acquisition in geographical information systems (Huang, Jensen, & Mackey, 1995; Jung, Jedynak, & Geman, 1997), the extraction of both graphical and textual information from document images (Esposito, Malerba, & Lisi, 2000) available either in workflow management systems or in digital libraries
