Abstract

The present study focuses on the market impact of the loss of automobile bodily injury premiums from the private sector to the Province of Quebec. The take-over by the Province and the implementation of a government owned no-fault plan, in which insurers still provide vehicle damage coverage but with direct compensation for collision losses, became effective on March 1, 1978. The results reported in this article clearly indicate an impact not only on concentration and competition in the property-liability insurance market but also on the financial results of the insurers operating in this market.
