Abstract

Failure data furnished for rotary couplers on 100-ton, unit-train coal cars were analyzed. The data were found to be compatible with a failure model based on a Weibull distribution. Failure rates for broken and worn-out couplers showed a very sharp increase at approximately 298 000 km (185 000 miles). These were couplers that were replaced at repair shops due to regular inspection. Missing couplers, i.e. those that failed in service, had a higher failure rate at the lower mileages. At the higher mileages, however, the failure rate for the worn-out couplers was the highest.
