Abstract

This paper gives results of the statistical analysis of 1378 function tests of controlled safety devices to prevent excess pressure. The probabilities deduced from these results for failure in opening direction are compared with the non-availabilities of such devices, as calculated in reliability analyses. The results show that the outside medium-controlled safety valves are more reliable than the intrinsic medium-controlled safety valves. The positive development of the test results gained for intrinsic medium-controlled safety valves from 1970 to 1980 is explained by the successful introduction of modern techniques applied in component tests, including reliability analyses, and in function tests. From the technical results requirements are derived for design and construction and for type approval and function tests of controlled safety devices.
