Abstract

Operators' heavy vehicle fleet engine component failure data were analysed. These data related to engines supplied by six different manufacturers. The components were classified into three groups: seals and joints, dynamic and static. A reliability trend, one of degradation, was only indicated for the dynamic components group. The Weibull distribution provided the best overall fit to seals and joints and static component data. The inverse Weibull distribution, however, significantly fitted the dynamic component data better than the Weibull. This is apparently consistent with the derivation of the distribution as a descriptive model for mechanical degradation.
