Abstract

The consumer behaviors of 107 parents currently using family day care were examined to determine if differences in the way they selected child care were associated with the use of a child care resource and referral program (CCR&R). Fifty-six (52%) of the parents had used a CCR&R when selecting child care, and 51 (48%) parents had not. Results indicated that parents who used CCR&Rs used more reliable sources of information about child care arrangements, spent more time looking for child care, and visited more settings. Nevertheless, other findings indicated that these differences did not translate into CCR&R parents being better informed consumers of child care than parents who did not use a CCR&R, or into the children of CCR&R parents receiving better quality care than children of parents who did not use a CCR&R.
