Abstract

To better understand the conditions of death, and to better pose the resultant questions, it is necessary to place the realities of death in relation to the social movements which are produced and cross Quebec and its institutions today. Repressed like a shameful illness, denied like an insupportable reality, denouncing the violence of social relations, death is henceforth integrated into the pathways of merchandise. Slowed by the progress of medical technology, institutionalized and increasingly solitary, death is the ultimate instance of individual dispossession. For this reason thanatology must, although subject to ridicule, question established powers and make of its reflection, the contestatory lever of social system which betrays life.
