Abstract

Intimate violence has become a high priority on the nation's public policy agenda. However, the research on victims of intimate violence and intervention by the civil justice system is scant. The research which has been conducted is limited by purposive sampling and is primarily qualitative. This article reviews the literature on the civil justice system's intervention in intimate violence cases, categorizes the research, describes its strengths and weaknesses, and suggests ways of operationalizing the variable “effectiveness” regarding civil protection orders.
