Abstract

In recognition of the prevalence of abused women within intimate relationships, two anti-abuse of women in intimate relationship bills (anti-AWIR bills) were filed in February. Senator Raul Roco sponsored the Senate version (Senate Bill 1458), while Representative Bellaflor Angara Castillo of Aurora sponsored the House version (House Bill 6750). This anti-AWIR bill seeks to penalize male or female offenders who commit violent acts. Lawyer Evalyn Ursua said that violence was experienced by women not only as something that occurred in private places such as the home but also as something inherent in the nature of relationships they are involved in.
