Abstract

The most critical period in Australia’s history was the six months following the entry of Japan into World War 11. The crisis cannot be fully understood without reference to the attitude of the political parties towards defence policy during the years preceding the war and to the decisionsmade by the Menziesgovernment during the first two years of the war against Germany.
