Abstract

In the construction of the Shin Kansen and improvement of narrow gauge lines it has been increasingly necessary to design long span bridges or special type bridges because of numerous and complex factors. Most of the bridges constructed are now made of concrete or prestressed concrete. However, in an earthquake-prone country like Japan, a heavy concrete bridge has been found disadvantageous, and accordingly, research for weight reduction and aseismatic structure of bridges has been undertaken. This article outlines Japan's new bridge technology which aims to resolve problems such as aseismatic long span bridge structures, special type bridges, and measures taken to alleviate noise.
