Abstract

An outline is presented of the development of a magnetic levitation research vehicle manufactured and tested in Japan as part of a research and development project into a new railway line to link Tokyo and Osaka, over 450KM, in about an hour. The vehicle possesses a linear motor for propulsion with the active side on the ground, and, for suspension and guidance of the vehicle, magnetic levitation with a superconducting magnet. Brief descriptions are given of the linear synchronons motor propulsion and of the magnetic levitation research vehicles presently being tested in Japan. An experimental project into a vehicle designed to perform at 500KM/H is being developed.
