Abstract

By the age of 80 approximately 75% of our population have reduced ability to hear faint sounds and understand speech. This is caused primarily by deterioration of the neurological pathways which conduct stimuli from the inner ear to the brain. Family members must understand the problems and potential rehabilitative measures so that they can provide the maximum help for the individual. Capabilities and limitations in the use of hearing aids, lipreading, and other remedial activities must be understood by the hearing impaired and their family members.
