Abstract

Nine older patients at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Battle Creek, Michigan participated in a structured reminiscence project by compiling a personal oral history. The project was designed to provide assistance to the individuals with their life review and coping with loss. The primary objective was to encourage reminiscing in a supportive setting using an oral history-life span format. Histories were obtained by tape recorded interview, transcribed and edited. All participants responded positively to the opportunity by recalling significant life experiences with clarity and enthusiasm. Evidence of the life review theory appeared consistently in the interviews, and the life span focus was felt to merit consideration as a contributing factor to this result.
