Abstract

Limited systematic information is available on how older adults perceive experiences with unrelated children in comrnu- nily-based intergenerational programs. In this sludy, twenty-four older adults were observed interacting with children in weekly inter- generational programs and were inlerviewed regarding their inter- generational program experience& Observations and interview re- sponses describe the positive and negative characteristics of the program-based relationships. Links between the findings and the growth and development of lhe children, older adults, and program characteristics are made. The age segregated nature of community life for almost all of the older adults in this study is highlighted, and the potential and documented benefits of community-based intergen- erational activities and relationships are discussed.
