Abstract

"Married Widowhood" is an overwhelming reality for husbands and wives with a spouse requiring a nursing home placement. At a time of increasing personal responsibilities, role changes and financial pressure, these spouses are also dealing with the loss of support of the most significant relationship in their lives. This "married widowhood" also can extend over long periods of time. Staff members working in long term care facilities need to recognize the special problems and needs of "married widows and widowers". Peer support groups in the nursing home settings can provide an important support network for "married widowers".
