Abstract

The present paper describes two studies that attempted to enhance activity levels among geriatric residents in an intermediate care facility. Study 1 investigated the effectiveness of recreational materials on lounge tables in increasing activity level and social interactions. Using an ABAB design, the results showed that putting games and cards on lounge tables increased activity levels only marginally. In Study 2, the effect of an organized activity (Bingo) on activity level and social interaction was investigated using an ABA design. The organized activity effectively increased activity and participation. Intxoducing an organized activity into a geriatric lounge area succeeded in facilitating more activity than merely providing residents access to recreational materials.
