Abstract

Many activity personnel talk about the difficulties of motivating residents to independently choose and participate in scheduled activities. The results of the research on learned helplessness and instrumental passivity provide activity personnel with a number of suggestions on how to decrease residents' dependent behaviors. As activity personnel structure the environment so residents perceive control, they may start to observe residents taking a more active role in activity groups and independently engaging in unscheduled leisure pursuits.
