Abstract

A family life program was developed to help improve the relationship between the adult child and oldcr parent by providing information and support for the adult child experiencing the stress of current or anticipated problems. This one-day intensive workshop was divided into five, 90-minute sessions. Each session was designed to cover a specific area that has an effect on the parentchild relationship: myths and realities of aging; physical changes with age; communication skilli; alternative housing; and availability of community programs for older adults. A non-equivalent control group, pretest-posttest design with a six-week follow-up was used to evaluate the program. The overall evaluation results of the workshop were positive. Results indicated that the workshop participants increased their knowledge of the aging process and of the available community resources for the elderly.
