Abstract

This paper forms part of our theoretical framework and the conceptual discussions and reflections that are being processed in the midst of the development of the Research Project: The Experience of Mothers who Confront the Intrafamilial Sexual Abuse of their Children, (UBACyT-UBA S030) subsidized by the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. This Research Project is exploratory, has a qualitative design, and at present we are carrying out our field work. The article analyzes the historic evolution of thought referred to child sexual abuse in general, during the second half of last century. It brings forth the social forces that would “naturalize” this phenomena, on the one hand, and on the other, those that made the critique of it, considering it a form of child victimization. This paper continues to analyze the plight of mothers from the point of view of victimology, bringing forth the diverse impacts mothers receive due to the intrafamilial sexual abuse of their children. These events allow us to consider them as both direct and primary victims, like their victimized children. The paper ends with some recommendations to the professional teams that intervene with these severe family problems.

Keywords: child sexual abuse, mother, incest, intrafamily violence.
