Abstract

This article describes existing housing adjustment theoryand assesses its adequacy in explaining the housing adjustment behaviors of households. The evolution of housing adjustment theory is divided into four stages: (1) the earlier models of rural-to-urban migration, (2) the models of intraurban mobility, (3) the models of the nonmoving adjustment decision, and (4) the more comprehensive models of housing adjustment that include both moving and nonmoving adjustment mechanisms within a single framework. The implications of these models for planningand policy arediscussed, along with suggestions for future research.
