Abstract

A new year heralds new beginnings in many different ways. One wish which united everyone involved with the World Report on Child Injury Prevention8 launched in Hanoi, Viet Nam on 10 December 2008, was that governments, communities, health practitioners and parents will step up to the challenge of preventing the needless suffering and loss of young lives due to injuries. The culmination of an intensive effort coordinated by WHO and UNICEF, this landmark report is a call to action backed up by the best available evidence on what works, what does not, and what we must learn more about.
