Abstract

This report is a discussion of those activities which have been conducted under the auspices of the Society of Automotive Engineers pertaining to motor vehicle seat belt assemblies and related occupant restraint devices such as shoulder harnesses. This report summarizes the activities of the groups in the Society active in this work, and covers in more detail the specifications which have been produced by these groups.

The SAE Standard is constantly being reviewed and revised as improvements in the state of the art are accomplished and as we understand more completely the complex problems of restraining passengers in motor vehicles. This Standard has received wide acceptance by manufacturers, legislative groups and policing agencies. We believe that this acceptance is a recognition of the fact that the Standard is constantly under supervision and reflects the latest thinking of all persons and agencies involved in the program.

A seat belt is a paradox of simplicity in design and complexity in functioning. A specification which concerns itself primarily with one aspect such as strength and ignores all the others cannot be considered adequate. It is the hope of the SAE Motor Vehicle Seat Belt Committee that the significance of all of the aspects will be recognized in considering occupant restraint, for only when a restraining device meets all of the basic requirements can it be considered an acceptable product.
