Abstract

This paper describes a newly developed "accelerator" for simulating vehicle crash conditions. This "accelerator" is capable of subjecting a pay load of 5000 pounds to an acceleration of 40 g. Lighter loads can be subjected to higher accelerations.

The shape and duration of the acceleration pulse as well as its magnitude can be varied within wide limits thereby providing a unique flexibility of operating parameters. The complete installations. 100-ft. rails are used to provide a low rate of deceleration for the pay load following the initial accelerating pulse. Permanent support equipment such as installations of light banks, high-speed photographic cameras, and other recording instruments are provided.

This equipment is used in the evaluation of virtually every part of the vehicle that affects occupant safety.
