Abstract

The year 1964 promises to establish a new record in numbers of deaths and of injuries from automobile accidents. The death rate for the first half of 1964 was seven percent higher than any other year in history. When the final toll of deaths and injuries for 1964 is known, a horrendous record will almost certainly be established. I hope that the public's attention will be directed to this and that they will be appalled and grieved and later indignant that so little has been done to protect them. I hope that this indignation will demand from Congress and those authorities knowledgeable in this field of safety, a better method of reducing this never ending toll of human life. As physicians and engineers with special knowledge and experience, we must be prepared to lead the way with reasonable and sound legislative proposals
