Abstract

As early as 1933, the State College High School in Pennsylvania introduced a course in Driver Education, and in the ensuing thirty-six years much change and expansion has occurred.

In recent years the Highway Safety Act of 1966 has placed increased emphasis on the training of beginning drivers, retraining of problem drivers, and on the standardization and improvement of course content. Contemporary high school driver education courses are vastly improved, especially those using the "Four Phase" method of instruction.

Programs of the 70's will place more emphasis on skid control, blow-out recovery, winter driving, night driving, emergency situations, and the effect of alcohol and drugs.

Carefully designed research needs to be done in the area of driver education techniques with emphasis on those techniques necessary to produce better and safer drivers.
