Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between the design of vehicles, both interior and exterior, and the injuries caused in crashes. This particular science has come to be known as biomechanics. It shows that the majority of deaths and injuries now occurring can be prevented by correct, crash-protective design. Among those topics included in the discussion are pedestrians, historical perspectives on crash protection, seat belts, head restraints, windscreen glass, general aspects of crash-protective design, legislation, innovation and product liability, and the future.
