Abstract

In Ontario, Canada the Coroner holds sweeping powers of investigation and is in a unique position to study and publicize safety hazards. He has access to all information relating to sudden or unusual deaths, and he is able to bring out his findings by public inquiry or inquest. The inquest serves not only to educate the general public about safety hazards, but the recommendations of a coroner's jury are reviewed by the Chief Coroner in Toronto, who then asks government departments, industry and others concerned with these recommendations to answer in writing to the points raised at inquest. This artication is a brief review of this coroners system and its application to automotive medicine.
