Abstract

In an effort to cut down the number of traffic accidents involving children as pedestrians and cyclists the Capital Region Safety Council set out seven years ago with a safety village program for children ages four to eight. Since that time over 24,000 children have completed the one hour course with yearly attendance now running at over 5,000 students or approximately 96% of the children eligible for the program in our area. While no definitive research has been carried out as to the effectiveness of the program we find the children attending the course for the second and third times make far fewer mistakes than newcomers. The classroom teachers who attend with the children are given about three hours of safety related subject matter that can be taken back to the school for further re-enforcement with the children.
