Abstract

A prospective study was carried out of 195 children treated at our hospital between June 1, 1975 and December 31, 1976 for injuries sustained in road accidents. The most common type of accident was the motor-vehicle pedestrian accident (35%). This type frequently resulted in severe injuries, the most common of which was a fractured femur. Motor-vehicle passenger accidents comprised (24%) of the series. The injuries were not quite so severe and involved the skull, facial bones and upper extremities more frequently. Motor-vehicle bicycle accidents (8%) and motorcycle accidents (8%) were both uncommon, but the latter type in particular resulted in severe injuries. Bicycle accidents not involving motor vehicles were the second most common type (26%) and the least dangerous. Most of the injuries in this group were upper extremity fractures.
