Abstract

Police accident investigation forms of moped collisions occurring during 1976-77 were collected from six Southern California cities. The relatively high concentration of moped activity within a number of communities suggests that the identification of major accident trends is warranted to provide a better understanding of this unique vehicle's accident experience.

Upon analysis, several strong trends in accident type emerged as well as associated vehicle and driver characteristics. Some nine distinct accident types were identified, with two-thirds of the collisions categorized into four: 1) single vehicle collision; 2) right-turning vehicle from same direction collides with moped; 3) moped collides with rear of vehicle; and 4) left-turning vehicle from opposing direction collides with moped.

Interactions between driver characteristics and accident types as well as data indicating relative risk of injury to moped operators is presented for consideration in the development of accident countermeasures.
