Abstract

Education about highway safety and other aspects of injury control offered to medical students in the United States at present is extremely fragmented and usually conceptually inadequate. This paper describes some of the fragments at one medical school, and defines what conceptual and skill components are needed by physicians. It describes a 20 hour basic medical school curriculum in injury control, specifically avoiding limiting such a course to traffic medicine because the latter is felt to be too restrictive for the needs of medical students.
