Abstract

Improvement in crash protection for racing car drivers requires coordinated effort by car designers, sanctioning bodies and race organizers. Within limits, car design can be significantly improved for driver protection. Principles of crashworthiness applied for many years to passenger cars can be applied to racing vehicles, but only through efficient interaction with these other elements of the racing environment. Driver head and leg protection appear to offer the most potential for injury reduction in racing crashes. The "Driver Protection Capsule" proposed in this paper is one possible approach to achieving reasonable levels of driver protection.
