Abstract

Among the most frequently struck fixed objects in motor vehicle collisions are poles, including utility poles, light standards and signs. A study on pole accidents along highways was recently completed by Southwest Research Institute for the U.S. Department of Transportation. The results of the study are summarized in this paper with special emphasis being given to vehicle damage and occupant injury severity characteristics of pole impacts.
